Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) v2.2

Course Content   Course Outline
Prerequisites   Who Should Attend

Prerequisites

To fully benefit from this course, learners should have the following prerequisite skills and knowledge:

  • Basic router configuration
  • Basic switch configuration
  • Basic virtual local area network (VLAN) configuration
  • Basic Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) configuration
  • Basic trunking configuration
  • Standard access list configuration

Note: The prerequisite topics are covered in the Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) course. It is recommended that a student achieve Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) status prior to taking this course. Students not seeking certification must still complete the prerequisite courses before enrolling in this course.

Course Content

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) v2.2 is recommended training for individuals seeking certification as Cisco CCNP. This course enables learners to use appropriate technologies to build scalable multilayer switched networks, to create and deploy a global intranet, and to implement basic troubleshooting techniques in environments that use Cisco multilayer switches for client hosts and services. This course also enables learners to improve traffic flow, reliability, redundancy, and performance for LAN switching that is self-supported or transported via a service provider. The purpose of this course is to enable a learner to achieve a mid-career professional-level competency.

Course Objectives

After completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Use the Campus Infrastructure module of the Enterprise Composite Network Model to deploy an efficient and expandable enterprise network
  • Define VLANs to segment network traffic and manage network utilization
  • Implement STP to accelerate network traffic convergence in Layer 2
  • Troubleshoot spanning tree, and identify enhancements provided by RSTP and MST
  • Implement multilayer switching to enable higher data throughput between isolated VLANs
  • Implement redundancy in the routing layer to improve and ensure end-to-end availability of network services
  • Secure switches in the Campus Infrastructure module against data theft and service loss in the event of network compromise
  • Configure the campus switches to optimize traffic flow when voice, video, and data applications traverse a single converged network
